MAGAZINE MONTH:

If you picked up this month’s Rotary magazine, you read a note from D.K. Lee mentioning it is one of Rotary’s oldest traditions. Its forerunner was first published in January 1911, with Paul Harris himself writing the main essay. You’ll find lots of great content in our magazine. Do take time to read it, and then share it.

HUMOR:

A couple in bed hears a knock at the door, which keeps getting louder.  The husband rolls out of bed and finds a drunk at the door asking for a push.  He refuses and gets back into bed.  His wife reminded him of the time he needed a push in the middle of the night, and that the Christian thing to do would be to get up and help him.  Reluctantly he went back to the door and asked the man if he still needed a push.  The response was yes.  Unable to see him, the man said where are you?    The response:  “Over here on your swing!”

DID YOU KNOW?

The balls used by major professional sports leagues are manufactured according to strict official specifications:  NBA Basketballs are made by Spalding.  Each is 29.5 in. in circumference and weighs 22 oz.  The leather cover is stamped with 122 pebbles per sq. in. (about 35,000 total) to improve gripping.  The rubber bladder inside, wrapped in nylon thread, is inflated to 7.5-8.5 lbs. per sq. in.

NFL footballs are made by Wilson, weighing between 14-15 oz.  They are cowhide stamped with stubble and sewn to a synthetic lining.  It’s bladder is inflated to 12.5-13.5 lbs. per sq. inch, and has 8 cross laces.

MLB Baseballs are made by Rawlings and weigh 5 oz. each.  A cork nucleus is encased in 2 thin rubber layers, wrapped in 369 yards of yarn.  The cowhide cover is sewn with 216 stitches using 88 inches of waxed red thread.
